'นักบวชอิสลาม' มีรากฐานจากซูฟี การบวชอิสลามที่แท้จริงไม่ใช่เพียงการงดเว้นอาหาร แต่ต้องรู้จักการ Tasawwuf และ 'Zuhd' (สละวัตถุภายนอก) บวกกับหมั่น 'Dhikr' (การระลึกถึงพระผู้เป็นเจ้า)

นักบวชอิสลามในภาษาอังกฤษคือ 'Islamic cleric' อิสลามมีนักบวชที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้นำทางศาสนา เทศนา และตัดสินข้อเท็จจริงตามหลักกฎหมายอิสลาม 

ส่วนคนที่ไม่เข้าใจรากฐานการบวชอิสลาม บางคนอาจบอกว่าอิสลามไม่มีนักบวช ซึ่งเป็นความเข้าใจผิดเพราะไม่เข้าใจแก่นแท้ของการบวชอิสลามที่แท้จริง"
